" FESUM and Emergency Hand Centres "

Hand injuries are frequent, (1,400,000 per year), and play an important role in traumatology, not only due to its frequency, but also to its seriousness. (620,000 of the injuries disclosed per year are serious cases)
The number of injuries at work has decreased sharply since 1995, however, since 1985, there has been a parallel level of accidents year after year. This applies both in relation to general injuries, and hand injuries. It is clear that prevention is limited.

Therefore, it should be admitted that it is hard to decrease the level of hand injuries. Prevention in the workplace is restricted. In addition, prevention in everyday life is even more restricted.

Compensation expenses account for 80% of the overall costs of a hand injury. If the factor `length of absence of the worker` is difficult to determine, as it depends on the worker's environment, the decrease in the Partial Permanent Incapacity rate will depend on the improvement of recovery results. Expecting to have better functional results, also involves foreseeing the decrease in expenses.

The number of injuries that receive the PPI and the PPI average rate show identical results. The number of the worker's absence days, which was increasing, is now stabilising. The levels of sanitary costs due to hand injuries, very low in terms of absolute value, is also slowing down.

Hospitalisation expenses can decrease depending on greater treatment effectiveness and thanks to the development of ambulatory surgery.

Emergency centres which belong to the European Federation of Emergency Services for hand injuries (F.E.S.U.M)

F.E.S.U.M's preliminary aim is to ensure the best quality possible regarding assistance to patients with hand injuries. This is possible both thanks to the co-ordination of the services members of the European Federation of Emergency Services for Hand Injuries, and to the development of training and research facilities related to hand traumatology and applications of microsurgery.

Finally, it also fosters initiatives that aim at the physical and social protection of blue-collar workers through the provision of information to companies, private and public organisations. FESUM is an associate member of the Federation of European Societies for Surgery of the Hand.
